Understanding Your Cardiac Imaging and Test Results

Electrocardiagram (ECG or EKG)

Small electrodes are attached to the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes capture the electrical activity and transmit it to a machine that records it as a graph. The ECG/EKG can reveal information about:

  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • The size and position of the heart's chambers
  • Any signs of damage to the heart muscle

Echocardiogram

These echoes are captured and converted into moving images on a monitor, allowing doctors to see the heart in real-time. This non-invasive test is usually performed by placing a probe on the chest that sends out high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the heart and other structures.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

A PET is a nuclear heart scan that uses a small amount of a radioactive tracer injected via an IV to create detailed 3D images of the heart. The images reveal blood flow, metabolic activity, and any areas of damage or scar tissue.
